It is a 2012 American supernatural horror film. A selfish widowed mother, Margaret White, spreads the belief that children are, in actuality, possessed by the devil to her friends and other mothers. Her eldest daughter Regan begins acting strangely after seeing a good deal of television including The Exorcist at the age of nine. When she becomes preoccupied with the murder of one of her friends who had an abortion, her mental state seems to worsen even more suddenly.

An expert on demonology performs an exorcism which seems to have no effect on Regan. Meanwhile, the mother decides her child's problem is due to demonic possession.

Writer-director Scott Derrickson explained his feelings about the film - "When someone challenges my beliefs, I feel threatened ... So I wanted to make a movie that would make the strongest case for Christianity as possible."Filming began on September 21, 2010 in Georgia with locations including Decatur and Covington. Production wrapped on November 19, 2010. The filming locations were kept secret with most cast and crew not learning where they were until the day of their arrival. The production used over thirty sets of fake police lights at one location for Regan's levitation scene.

The film has a rating of 44% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 101 reviews. The critical consensus states: "SINISTER lacks the jump-scares and tension of other horror films, but it is still highly watchable thanks to its intriguing premise."Many reviewers praised both leads, particularly McAvoy in his debut performance. Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times said that "Without spoiling it for you, let's just say if [McAvoy] can look in a mirror again in ten years, there might be a sequel." James Berardinelli gave a mixed review in his review saying,"There isn't a lot going on here... but still something to appreciate."The film opened the 40th Fantastic Fest, as a "Special Presentation" on September 22, 2012. It was invited to the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2012. It played at the Deauville American Film Festival on September 12, 2012 and at the London Frightfest Film Festival on August 24, 2012. Sony Pictures Classics handled the US release of "Sinister" on October 12, 2012.

In 2014 a sequel was released called Sinister 2 . The film starred James Ransone as a crime novelist who moves his family into a house where a murder took place.

The film debuted at No. 4 with $7 million, an average of $1,257 per theater. The weekend gross of the film brings it up to $16 million, which is second highest in October behind "The Hunger Games".
